How sustainability appears

The Australian Curriculum has three dimensions: learning areas, general capabilities and cross-curriculum priorities. Sustainability is one of the three cross-curriculum priorities; ACARA describes it as addressing “the ongoing capacity of Earth to maintain all life” and organises it around four sets of organising ideas: Systems, World views, Design and Futures. The priority is applied through content descriptions and elaborations in the learning areas, for example Science (ecosystems, the water and carbon cycles), Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS F–6 and Geography 7–10, with units such as ‘Water in the world’, ‘Biomes and food security’ and ‘Environmental change and management’), Technologies (sustainability as a design factor and design criterion), and Health and Physical Education (health, wellbeing and inclusion). Content descriptions carry official codes such as AC9S4U01 (Science), AC9HS4K06 (HASS), AC9HG10K01 (Geography), AC9HC9K05 (Civics and Citizenship), AC9HE7K04 (Economics and Business), AC9HP4P10 (HPE) and AC9TDE8K04 (Design and Technologies).
