Flanders (Belgium): Eco Heroes in the national curriculum

Vlaanderen

It is a planning aid for teachers, not an official alignment: no education authority has reviewed, approved or accredited Eco Heroes. Always check the current official documents that apply to your school.

Last checked: October 2026. The lesson-plan references were checked against our 51 lesson plans in October 2026. Official curriculum wording is quoted in its original language, followed by our own English translation (not an official one).

How sustainability appears

Education is a matter for the Communities. The Flemish government sets the goals; school networks write the leerplannen. All valid goals are published on onderwijsdoelen.be. Primary: new minimumdoelen for the end of year 4 and year 6 in 10 subject disciplines have applied since 1 September 2025 and become compulsory in phases from 2026-2027. The old eindtermen remain valid until 31 August 2028 for Dutch, maths and science and technology, and until 31 August 2030 for the other areas (e.g. Mens en maatschappij). Secondary: eindtermen are grouped under 16 sleutelcompetenties. For key competence 10 ('Competenties inzake duurzaamheid') no separate goals are set 'omwille van de verwevenheid' with key competences 6 (STEM), 7 (citizenship) and 9 (spatial awareness), so sustainability is assessed through goals such as 06.39, 07.01–07.04 and 09.06.
