How sustainability appears

Education is a matter for the 16 Länder, so binding curricula are Land-level; the KMK sets common recommendations. The KMK/BMZ Orientierungsrahmen defines 11 core competences in the areas 'Erkennen – Bewerten – Handeln' (recognise, assess, act) for primary and lower secondary, and the KMK's 2024 recommendation states that ESD is oriented to the UN 2030 Agenda, that the '17 globalen Nachhaltigkeitsziele' should flow into everyday school life, and recommends a whole school approach. In the Bavarian example, 'Bildung für Nachhaltige Entwicklung (Umweltbildung, Globales Lernen)' is a cross-subject educational goal of LehrplanPLUS and appears in subject competence expectations.
