How sustainability appears
There is no stand-alone sustainability subject: climate and environment content sits in the statutory science, geography and citizenship programmes of study (e.g. KS3 science: 'the production of carbon dioxide by human activity and the impact on climate'; KS4: 'evidence ... for additional anthropogenic causes of climate change'). The DfE's 'Sustainability and climate change: a strategy for the education and children's services systems' (2022, updated 2023) states that children build this knowledge 'through science, geography and citizenship programmes', and the Government response to the Curriculum and Assessment Review (Nov 2025) commits to enhancing climate education in a revised curriculum for first teaching from 2028.
