SDG 6 — Clean Water & Sanitation

A real, ready-to-teach lesson from the handbook (Ages 8–12). Open it to see the depth.
Key question: Why is clean water a right and not a privilege?
Hook — Bring a bottle of dirty water and one of clean water. Ask: "Which would you drink?" Reveal that 2.2 billion people lack access to safe drinking water.
Key concepts — Only 3% of Earth's water is fresh, and under 1% is easily accessible · 2.2 billion people lack safely managed drinking water · contaminated water kills more than wars, especially children · clean toilets and handwashing are essential to health and dignity.
Activity — Filtration experiment: build a water filter with sand, gravel and charcoal; filter dirty water and compare before and after.
Discussion — How much water do you use each day, and how could you cut it? · What would you do if your tap water wasn't safe? · Why are toilets so important for health?
Case study — In Ethiopia, the WaterAid project brought solar-powered wells to remote communities. Girls who once walked 6 hours a day for water can now attend school; 2.6 million people reached since 2015. [Source: WaterAid Ethiopia; UNICEF WASH Data]
